Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure the next generation could read them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign ones, like dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Incorporated in 1917, Toto’s early years mirrored Japan’s economic development. In the beginning, Toto produced products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. To do this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s in order to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm’s global market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. The company embraced a just-in time method of managing supply chains and used the same methodology in its sales strategy. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than standard models.

The first museum of the company opened in 2015 and features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products and their evolution and its group companies (all that deal with ceramics), historical background of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.

They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

The band started out as a quartet and recorded two albums – 1979’s self titled debut, and 1980’s Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of problems. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to deliver the top single or they would drop the album. Toto was able to do this with the help from the hit song “Africa.”

Toto’s musical mastery is a result of their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for ’80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distortion AOR and could sound totally wrong, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV The band’s fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn’t as popular as IV. The band managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

The band’s third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball’s greater virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich’s work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour to help promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the band’s first album without the single track “A”. The album also contained a previously unreleased track titled “Kari-Anne”.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia–Wetton, Palmer, and Howe–convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
